Basic steps for performing Hawan

Om Namah Shivaya

Materials for Hawan

  • Lota of water.
  • Hawan khund.
  • Pieces of sticks and coals.
  • Matches and camphor.
  • Two soparees.
  • Two paan leaves.
  • One coin.
  • Incense sticks.
  • Assoted flowers.
  • Mango leaves.
  • In a thali place sugar, rice, googol, black till and honey.
  • Any fruit.

Sit facing East and place the havan khund in front of you. Take the lota of water and place some white rice and flower in side. Fold the end of a mango leaf and place it in the lota. Churn the water in the lota saying "Om shree gangaa maataa namaha aawahayaami" (this is to invoke Mother Ganga in the lota.)
Take some water in the right palm of the hand using the left hand. Ask God to purify you and recite "Om Shree Krishnaaya namah". Paste the water in the two palms and pass over the whole body.
Sprinkle water from the lota using mango leaf over all the materials and in the four directions.

Take a paan leaf, some white rice, a coin, a soparee and a flower in the hand and invoke the Devataas Shri Ganesh, Mata Gowrie, Lord Shiva, by chanting mantras. Then recite, while passing the materials three times around the fire, in a clockwise direction "Om Shree Agni devataa namaha aawahayaami staapayaami"
